Choir of Species is an interdisciplinary project that unites science and art and
gives rise to Acoustic Ecology, Biodiversity and Bioart. Specifically, it involves
the recording of sound emissions and electrical pulses of living beings.
This project was carried out in Switzerland, between August and October
2023 in the framework of the artistic residency supported by ProHelvetia.
This support allowed to develop recordings in situ in certain points of
Switzerland and to select sonorities and recordings to be used in a sound
piece.
At each point of the map, it will be possible to listen to selected fragments of
multiple field recordings, using hydrophones, air microphones, contact
microphones, electrodes and electroencephalogram plates for gamma, alpha,
beta, etc. frequency recordings.
The concept: How do we hear, how do we NOT hear?
Noise pollution is an overload of frequencies that affect our daily life.
This project invites to acoustic responsibility, invites to the development of
deep listening, respect and the culture of communication and coexistence.
Choir of species collaborates with biological research in the sound recording
of signals of living beings and also in the collection of soundscapes that are
affected by noise pollution generated by the human species. It also pays
attention to emissions that we do not hear with the naked human ear in order
to sensitize the reception of frequencies and their effect on our daily lives.
The piece Choir of Species Switzerland23 is an aesthetic and poetic
arrangement of these materials, seeking to cultivate sensitivity and expand
our hearing to our entire physical body that interacts continuously with a sea
of signals that try to be received. Hence the value of communication.
Communication as survival, as nourishment of interspecies networks as
sculpture and as a contribution to the location of the human species in the
wide spectrum of frequencies where all living beings coexist.
This project includes a postcard that each person who wishes to receive by
mail can request by the mail: contacto@juanitafernandez.com and it will be
sent as a symbol of the evolution of our species.
Thank you for this time and for listening. I wish us all the greatest possible
sensitivity to attend to reality and try to place ourselves where we can listen
and be listened to.
